The Mayor’s Office of Partnerships and Grant Services (OPGS), The Magi Group, and thirty-one graduates of OPGS’ intensive proposal writing course including twenty-six District non-profit executives/development staff and eight government employees complete the training at the One Judiciary Square Building.
The Mayor’s Office of Partnerships and Grant Services (OPGS) partnered with The Magi Group, LLC for an 8-week proposal writing course from May 10 to June 28, 2016. Participants were District non-profit executives, staff, and government employees. Designed for both the novice and the experienced individual, this intensive 8-week course combined expert instruction, with practical exercises, taking participants step-by-step through all the stages of planning programs, locating funding sources, and writing grant proposals. Using common grant development formats, the course guided participants through the development of a proposal with emphasis on the following:
- How to assess the capacity and funding attractiveness of your organization.
- How to develop relationships with funders.
- How to develop a compelling statement of need.
- How to design evidence-based programs and create a clear logic model.
- How to make work plans work for you.
- How to avoid the common pitfalls of proposal writing.
- How to prove that your programs and services will work.
- How to plan a budget for partnerships or program expansion.
- How proposals are reviewed and selected for awards.
Also discussed were writing techniques to help make the grant-writing process easier and faster. The instructor presented valuable content information while participants practiced on sample projects. The class the instructor also provided individual consultation and support for participants currently developing grant applications and participants were encouraged to bring in their actual applications to work on during the class. The OPGS office will also host a ceremony this month for past and current graduates of the class to network and celebrate their achievement.
Julian Peters, with the nonprofit DC Urban Green in Ward 7, was a participant in OPGS’s 2015 8 week grant writing course taught by Magi Group LLC in partnership with OPGS. Since participating in this course he has become a successful grant writer. In the later part of 2015 as a result of his participation in the program, Urban Green won two grants for an automotive training school in the district; the grants totaled $150,000, one for $100,000 and another for $50,000 from the Volkswagen and Toyota foundations respectively. He said without participating in this course it would not have happened and is grateful for these types of programs provided by OPGS.
The 8-week proposal writing course is held once every year. To learn more about how to sign up for the class, receive power point presentations from the class, or information about grants funding opportunities in the District, please visit opgs.dc.gov for more information.
